Energy storage

P&Q is implementing an innovative contract for the construction of a 2MW photovoltaic farm cooperating with an energy storage. An interesting aspect of the project is the implementation of the proprietary control and monitoring system “ETA” concentrating the object data, enabling data analysis, control and optimization of energy management.

In connection with our implementation, we would like to present the topic of energy storage from the technical, economic, legal and legislative side.

What are energy storage?

The energy storage is an installation used to store the supplied energy in any form, and also to collect the stored energy at any time. The above definition applies not only to electricity storage, but also other forms, including thermal energy. Electricity can be stored, among others in the electrochemical form in lithium-ion batteries – at the moment this storage technology is strongly developed, characterized by high efficiency, and with its popularization and increasing production outlays, manufacturers offer lower prices (the price of a li-ion battery over the last 10 years fell by about 90%).

The role of energy storage is to stabilize the operation of the power system – balancing the grid operation, reducing problems related to energy quality. The use of devices enables the control of RES generation sources and independence from the influence of weather conditions, which creates new opportunities in the context of abandoning conventional energy. Apart from the technological function, the economic aspect is extremely important, energy storage cooperating with renewable energy sources, including solar farms or wind farms can accumulate surplus energy at the time of production, and then the accumulated energy can be resold at the most profitable moment – at the peak of demand.

Energy storage - role in the energy of the future.

The energy sector is moving towards decentralization, digitization as well as further expansion of low-carbon energy sources, therefore the use of energy storage on a large scale over the coming years is inevitable.

The power industry of the future opens the way for many industries, and one of them is certainly the IT industry. Widespread automation, digitization, popularization of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms allow for the creation of intelligent power networks in which, due to the significant decentralization of generating units – mainly due to renewable energy sources – energy storage (both industrial and prosumer ones) will play one of the key roles . The above-mentioned solutions will allow the creation of control systems balancing the grid operation, adjusting the energy demand to the supply, optimizing the operation of renewable energy sources – and thus new opportunities will be introduced in the context of decarbonisation.

The use of energy storage will find ever better economic justification. Electricity prices are rising steadily and battery costs are falling. Additional legislation, which will be gradually implemented, will facilitate the development of this sector.
